Ana Jikia is an artist from Tbilisi, Georgia, currently residing in Basel. Originally trained as a classical pianist, she has developed a diverse artistic practice encompassing various mediums such as music, drawing, and installation over the past ten years. Ana has been actively involved in the underground scene of experimental music in eastern europe as well as internationally for years. She is co-founder of Georgian experimental music label Blue Yogurt.
Her works come to life through active experimentation with the collected material, with its form and its meaning. Almost everything she uses is “secondhand”, “found” or “given” therefor acknowledging history and identity of the material is essential to her message. Ana creates worlds that tell stories about the material; the work demonstrates the integrity and agenda of the material, its untamable sides, its depth, and its path.
Her audio works are often presented in a pre recorded mix format with a lot of collages and contrasts. She also performs experimental DJ sets in live. Her audio pieces try to create moment of sentimentality and introspectiveness for the listener. In an attempt to directly address and attract listeners emotions Ana often uses audios from movie fragments and trailers, because of their familiar and often enchanting character barrier is lifted and the audience is invited to go between the subtile layers of the work.
